One Minute's Silence Overkill
...is becoming ridiculous. Paying your respects and showing appreciation is one thing but not only do we now often get a minute's silence / applause to 'respect' just about anyone connected with a club, the Holland v France match coming up is going to be halted mid-game (in the 14th minute) to honour Cruyff, Holland's number 14.
Cruyff should, rightly, be honoured and lauded on many counts but this is ridiculous.

I seem to be the last person in the world to take my hat off when a funeral cortege goes past.
I will never forget my mum and dads neighbour, a world war II vet like my dad, removing his hat and saluting as we headed off to my dads funeral. Very moving

The 14th minute has been set aside as a refreshment break.

Hot weather. Innit.

I agree that stopping a game for it regardless of who it is is ridiculous.

World is full of soft poofs nowadays, we've all got to die.

We seem to be having a minutes silence for just about everything nowadays used to be for just famous statesman eg when Churchill died we had one impeccably observed. Now it seems it's for everyone how about one for Greater Anglia trains who seem to have died every weekend.

I cant wait until a home team is doing a minutes applause (such as Newcastle in the 17th) and the away team score.

We nearly become the first team to fuck it up vs Palace a few years ago.

Re: One Minute's Silence Overkill
Cruyff wasn't a traditional footballer and stood out from the rest as a player and there were some pretty damn good players around in his career.

Therefore he should have a different way of marking his passing and hats off to the Dutch for finding a way to do so.

Too many people want things to be routine in football and it was invented to take you away from routine.

In the 1989 European Cup Semi at San Siro with Milan and Real Madrid, the ref stopped the match after a minute in memory of Hillsborough.

Wouldnt say these minutes silence things are a particularly new phenomenon.

Post 96ers etc etc

Re: One Minute's Silence Overkill
The minutes silence will soon be a thing of the past...if not already.
Nobody can be trusted nowadays..sad truth.
The minutes applause is safe.
I remember the George Best applause at ours..that was playing safe...given our history
Would have preferred a minutes silence myself.
He was a great footballer.

How about a Minute's Overkill instead?

...Or better yet 5.12 Minute's Overkill?

Re: One Minute's Silence Overkill
I agree it's a bit over the top, the problem is minutes silences/applauses happen so often now they've lost their meaning to an extent.

Re: One Minute's Silence Overkill
Given that it's just a friendly it's quite a good idea.

If we did that for Moore after 6 minutes we would all think it was good.
